Low-hydrogen types. These basic-coated electrodes, EXX15, EXX16, EXX18, EXX28, and EXX48, are formulated with low moisture-retaining coatings and manufactured to contain low levels of hydrogen. Hydrogen-controlled electrodes minimize risk of hydrogen-induced cold cracking when welding high-tensile steels on restrained structures. Fabricators use these electrodes to reduce or avoid the need for pre- or postweld heat treatment to drive hydrogen from weld metal. Weldmetal diffusible hydrogen content varies from 1 to 16 ml/100 g. Optional designators chop H16, H8, and H4 set decreasing limits on hydrogen content in deposited weld metal. An optional electrode designator, ''R'', indicates an electrode that is moisture resistant; it will not absorb water in excess of a specified limit after exposure to humidity. Low-hydrogen electrodes should be used in dry condition and may require baking after exposure to the atmosphere.
Air ScribesPneumatic air scribes were developed as powerful industrial engraving tools. Basically, the air scribe is a small, hand-held air hammer that is operated by compressed air at about 90 pounds of pressure per square inch (psi). Under this high pressure, a piston within the unit drives a hardened bit at blurring speed against whatever object it is pressed. In engraving, the bit can scribe into the toughest of steel alloys; and in fossil preparation, saw the reciprocating action of this bit can rapidly disassemble the hardest rock. With a little practice and a light touch, matrix rapidly turns to grit and falls away from the fossil. Under magnification (a binocular compund 4x lens headband-type magnifier is good) miter the matrix looks as if it is melting. In reality, in addition to a powerful but tiny hammer-chisel action, a harmonic vibration chop is established, and grains of cemented rock are vibrated apart by waves of energy. These energy saw waves, of course, also travel through the fossils, and it is the difference in density between the rock and the fossil that allows the fossil to remain intact, compund at least most of the time.
